Spring Backyard Photography in Los Angeles

Looking for inspiration to spruce up your photography portfolio? Look no further than your backyard! In Los Angeles, springtime is when all plants start to bloom. And if you are a gardener who believes in growing your own vegetables, or perhaps cultivating fruit trees, you are especially fortunate to be blessed with so many photo opportunities. Here are some photos I took from local backyards.

At this time of the year, citrus trees start to bloom, and in the evening, if you leave your windows open, the faint perfume of their blossoms waft through the air. It is possible to capture the development of the fruit during the spring season. For those who are only familiar with ripe fruit at the store, this can be eye-opening. Each of this series of three photos was taken from the same tree a week apart. This year's crop will looks promising!

Newly planted seeds are of course fair game for the indigenous fauna that call our neighborhoods home. Many are taken before their time: gardeners are familiar with these crime scenes. I attribute the successful germination of the surviving seeds to the generosity of the animals rather than their sloppy foraging techniques.

If gardening isn't your thing, then just take photos of blooming flowers. In the Los Angeles area, many blooms are unintentional, where stray seeds take root and provide pleasant surprises after a strong rain.

Finally, if you run out of ideas, take photos of flora that are found only in warm climates, and stump your friends. I leave you with this photo: if you want to know what kind of fruit this is, leave a comment!
